Compression Socks 101: Everything You Need to Know

What Are Compression Socks?

Only the best thing to happen to your feet and legs, but we may be a little biased! Compression socks (or compression stockings as they’re sometimes referred to in medical circles) are kind of like socks on steroids, but in the best way. Tighter at the foot and ankle and looser at the top, these socks use graduation to gently massage your muscles to help keep the blood from pooling in your feet. So you could call them anti-gravity socks, or maybe just the superheroes of the sock world!

How Do Compression Socks Work?

The easy answer is that compression socks help push the blood back up your leg. If you want to get a little more technical than that, here are the details.

Compression socks use a system of graduated pressure measured in millimeters of Mercury, or mmHg. The higher the number, the stronger the compression. The compression is tightest at the toe, foot or ankle and decreases to a looser fit up the length of the sock. The pressure caused by this graduation reduces the size of veins, which amazingly enough, allows more blood to travel through them. The blood flows more easily up toward the heart and doesn’t get stuck in superficial veins. This gives you a better supply and flow of oxygenated blood and can reduce swelling and pain and help prevent blood clots.

What are the Benefits of Compression Socks?

The benefits abound, but some of the most useful and practical benefits include things that are important to everyone, like pain relief, an energized step, and reduction of swelling. Compression socks are also great for:

  • Preventing blood from pooling in the legs
  • Supporting vein health
  • Decreasing the chances of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis, or DVT
  • Helping recover from varicose veins
  • Relieving joint pain
  • Aiding in recovery after surgery
  • Recovering after training, sport competitions, or events
  • Revitalizing legs during long periods of standing or sitting

Who Wears Compression Socks?

Anyone who wants to feel better! Compression socks are great for anyone who works long hours sitting or standing, especially airline pilots and personnel, nurses and medical professionals, teachers, retail workers, salon and beauty professionals, or drivers and construction workers.

But it’s not just a great idea to wear compression socks while you’re working. They can benefit an array of people and situations during everyday wear, too.
